It also highlights: the disparity among countries in terms of access to production factors; the extensive production systems; and the substantial national and regional diversity of production. The paper then focuses on the changing economic context in the 1990s that led to increased production costs, thus reducing the profitability of growing C. canephora and cutting robusta coffee production in Africa. Socioeconomic and environmental issues confronting the future of C. canephora production in Africa are explored.
