Coffee seedlings were transplanted to germinated pots, with Al being applied only to one pot of the set; the other pot contained a culture solution without Al. The treatments consisted of six Al concentrations: 0.0, 1.0, 2.0, 4.0, 8.0, and 16.0 mg.L exponente -1. After a fifty-day period, the plants were harvested, divided into three parts (shoot, roots exposed to Al and roots grown without Al), oven dried, weighed and the Al and P contents determined. The Al wich was applied to only half of the root system had no effect on shoot growth, but decreased the growth of the roots system had no effect on shoot growth, but decreased the growth of the roots exposed to Al and increased the development of the roots in the side without Al. The contents of P and Al in the shoot were unaffected up to an Al concentration of 8.0 mg.L exponente -1. Above that, there was a reduction in the P content and a increase in the Al content in the shoot. The P content in the injured roots by Al was decreased, while the content of P in the roots cultivated in nutrient solution without Al was increased with each increment of Al added in the nutrient solution. The Al effects on the growth of the coffee seedlings appear more dependent on the decrease of the P accumulation than on the toxic effects of the element.
