Brown, brownish-green, and green budsticks of at least 16, 18, and 4 weeks old respectively were taken from plagiotrophic branches. The results showed that the bud age of one, and three-month old rootstock had no significant effect on the percentage of budtake. Three-month-old-rootstock, and brownish-green budstick gave the best stem height and diameter at two months after budding, but brown budsticks gave the highest budtake (87.71 percent). At one-month-old-rootstock green budsticks gave highest budtake (83.19 percent), but the scion growth was not significantly different compared to the other. The results showed that one-month-old-seedlings (3.87 mm hypocotyl diameter of 20 cm high with 5.6 leaves), was prospective to be used as rootstock. It is hoped that this method can increase efficiency in maintaining the nursery of clonal cocoa.
