In this work the dry matter and the chemical composition of the litter were measured and its relationship to A11 horizon fertility was studied. The work was done in the Cacao Research Center, Bahia, Brazil, in four cacao plantations: the first and second without shade trees, the third under Erythrina fusca shade and the forth under native shade trees. The soil is a Typic Tropudalf. There were found a) an average of letter dry matter of 11.6 t ha exponent -1 which is high as compared to tropical forests including the Amazon forest; b) a variation of the contents and reservoirs of Ca, N, Mg, K and P in the litter and in the top soil according to the type of cacao planting and the quantity of litter dry matter and c) a close relationship between the chemical composition of the litter and of the top soil, the magnesium content having a particular position because of its correlation with calcium, nitrogen and phosphorus as in the litter as in the top soil.
