Nigeria was estimated both by the extraction method of Mehta et al. and the ignition method of Saunders and Williams. The values by the two methods were in most cases similar, and owing to its simpler procedure the ignition methods was selected for routing analysis of the soils. The organic phosphorus contents of the soils vary from 12-44.5 mg./100 g. soil and represent 21-74 per cent of the soils total phosphorus. The values are lower in cultivated than in the uncultivated soils, and the response of cacao to phosphorus fertilizer at 11 sites shows a positive correlation between yield of cacao and the organic phosphorus levels, the coefficient of correlation (gamma) being 0.85
