Some of them are common rice diseases, and others are not. Environmental conditions in the nursery and nursery management favor the spread of these diseases. Seeds are tickly sown in nursery flat (box) of 60 x 30 x 3 cm in size, which are kept under high temperature and humidity. Among seed-borne diseases, Bakanae, brown leaf spot and several bacterial rots have remarkably increased. Benomyl (Benlate), TMTD-benomyl (Benlate-T) and TMTD-thiophanatemethyl (Homai) are recommended for seed disinfection. For large scale nursery center, spray type seed disinfection machines which can treat 1-1.2 tons seeds per hour were used experimentally. Some polyxenic soil pathogens like Fusarium, Pythium or Rhizoctonia often cause much damage, and also hitherto unknown soil pathogens like Rhizopus, Trichoderma, Mucor etc. are sometimes much more serious. The later ones do not infect plants directly, but usually secrete toxic substances which inhibit seed germination and root growth. Hydroxyisoxazole (Tachigaren), TPN (Daconil) and Benomyl are recommended for the disinfection of soil and nursery flat materials. Calcium-hypochloride, TMTD-Benomyl and 60-65 grades C steam are also applicable to depress fungal population, though not complete, in germination room or on the surface of nursery flats
